SunWatch could not serve this community without the support of dedicated volunteers. From teens working towards National Honor Society requirements, to adults interested in Ohio’s pre-history, to Seniors with decades of talent and knowledge they are eager to share, SunWatch’s volunteer program is designed to match every skill and desire in the appropriate capacity.

 Volunteer Opportunities

SunWatch offers a variety of unique and rewarding volunteer opportunities for all ages. Volunteer activities at SunWatch include site interpreters, village reconstruction, prairie restoration and gardening, and fundraising. SunWatch volunteers enable us provide the best programming and information to the community and our guests from around the world. Come and join the SunWatch family in one of Dayton's oldest neighborhoods.

SunWatch volunteers are not required to work a set number of hours each month. There is a required volunteer orientation for all new volunteers that will take about two hours. We review Society policies and safety policies and tour the facility and meet staff members. For information about all of our exciting volunteer opportunities, call SunWatch at 937-268-8199 or e-mail This email address is being protected from spambots. Volunteer Possibilities

Site Interpreters/Docents
Share the history of SunWatch with our guests. Students and adults love our guided tours which provide them with information and hands-on activities that take them back in time. Complete training is provided; a desire to share the past is all that is required. This is a great opportunity for individuals, couples or friends to enjoy together.

Village Reconstruction / Prairie Restoration
Would you like to be a part of preserving the history of the Miami Valley?
Annual village reconstruction and prairie restoration and harvesting are necessary to maintain and (hopefully) expand the number of features available throughout the village for the public to view and experience. To accomplish this, we utilize seasonal personnel to help reconstruct the village to the condition that it was in when it was occupied almost 800 years ago. We use only the materials and techniques that were available to the Fort Ancient villagers in AD 1200. Students and volunteer groups have helped us harvest grass and timbers for the reconstruction efforts.

College students from across the United States, and even from foreign countries, compete each summer for inclusion in an exceptional eight-week summer internship hosted by the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery and SunWatch Indian Village/Archaeological Park. A handful of budding archaeologists are selected by the Boonshoft Museum to spend six weeks excavating a North Dayton Fort Ancient period site contemporaneous with SunWatch and two weeks working on the reconstruction of the 800-year-old Village.
