Volunteer

Whether or not you are a member, we welcome volunteers ages 18 and up, including many enthusiastic Senior Citizens. We have volunteer opportunities that fit your interests and availability.

Volunteer Opportunities

SunWatch offers a variety of unique and rewarding volunteer opportunities for adults. Volunteer activities at SunWatch include site interpreters, prairie restoration and gardening. SunWatch volunteers enable us to provide the best programming and information to the community and our guests from around the world. Come and join the SunWatch family in one of Dayton's oldest neighborhoods.

SunWatch volunteers are expected to work at least 8 hours each month. There is a required volunteer orientation for all new volunteers that will take about two hours. We review Society policies and procedures, tour the facility and meet staff members. For information about all of our exciting volunteer opportunities, call SunWatch at 937-268-8199 or e-mail This email address is being protected from spambots. Volunteer Possibilities:
Site Interpreters/Docents
Share the history of SunWatch with our guests. Students and adults love our guided tours which provide them with information and hands-on activities that take them back in time. Complete training is provided; a desire to share the past is all that is required. This is a great opportunity for individuals, couples or friends to enjoy together.

Three Sisters Garden
The garden at SunWatch educates visitors about daily life during the Fort Ancient era.  Using companion gardening techniques, village residents grew corn, squash and beans to provide staples for the village.  While an herb garden is now cultivated in the village, early Ohio residents would have foraged for flavorful herbs outside the village.  Volunteer gardeners are needed seasonally to help weed and beautify this important component of the SunWatch village.

Prairie Restoration
Would you like to be a part of preserving the history of the Miami Valley?
Annual prairie restoration is necessary to maintain and (hopefully) expand the number of features available throughout the village for the public to view and experience. To accomplish this, we engage seasonal help to help return the prairie to the condition that it was in when it was occupied almost 900 years ago.  This is an excellent opportunity for corporate and community group volunteer service.
Please allow 4-6 weeks for planning a group project.

Internships
College students from across the United States, and even from foreign countries, compete each summer for inclusion in a master’s level, eight-week summer internship hosted by the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery and SunWatch Indian Village/Archaeological Park. A handful of budding archaeologists are selected by the Boonshoft Museum to spend six weeks excavating a North Dayton Fort Ancient period site contemporaneous with SunWatch and two weeks working on the reconstruction of the 800-year-old Village.
