Prairie Programs
Open to school groups of 10-30 students, SunWatch offers three unique prairie education programs that last approximately 1-3 hours. These programs are held outside in the native prairie (dress appropriately as the weather requires). Groups must schedule at least one month in advance. Prairie Classes are offered seasonally, call for availability. Our prairie programs cover many of the Ohio Math and Science Academic Content Standards.
Grade School Prairie Class
Younger students are introduced to our prairie, its restoration, and maintenance. They will learn about native prairie plants and their uses, with an emphasis on sensory perception. Grades 4-6. Includes a craft project. Fee: $4.00 child, $5.00 adult.
Junior High Prairie Survey Class
Student will learn a variety of skills used in prairie restoration and maintenance. They will receive practical experience using a variety of academic skills, including identification of grasses and forbs, graphing (bar graphs & pie chars) calculating percentages, using estimates, working with formulas, and more. Ecological concepts will be introduced as well. Grades 6-8. Fee: $4.00 child, $5.00 adult.
High School Prairie Survey Class
Using a variety of skills and tools, students will learn about prairie restoration and maintenance. They will receive experience in vegetation surveying, using geometry and algebra, and will learn ecological concepts, as emphasized by the Ohio Graduation Test and other Academic Content Standards. There will be hands on learning using a GPS unit, transit, and compass, along with an introduction to elementary statistical analysis. Classes interested in this program should have an understanding of the Pythagorean Theorem and basic algebra. Grades 9-12. Fee: $5.00 student/adult.
